Steve Jobs

25 Aug

I got the news last night:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

I know it might seem kind of silly for me to be sad about this, especially since he’s still staying on as the Chairman of the Board, but it feels like the end of an era in a lot of ways, and unfortunately it doesn’t signal great things about his health.

Tim Cook seems like a great guy, and I’m sure he will continue to do wonderful things for the company, but Steve Jobs is an extraordinary person.  He changed the world, not just with computers…  He’s just inspirational to me as a human being.  He has inspired me a tremendous amount to have a vision, to be clear, precise and beautiful in everything I do.

So, thank you, Steve.  Thank you for your wonderful work with such an amazing company, bringing it to unbelievable heights and for doing so much to inspire so many along the way.

Magical iPod of the Future

24 Aug

Yes, yes, yes.  Before you say it, I know this is fantasy.  I know that this doesn’t exist and it probably won’t exist for some time but…  Couldn’t you just imagine?  This would be my dream come true in a lot of ways.  Having a projectable keyboard and a projectable screen?  You might as well just stop right there, because it would be hard for small devices to get any better…  And toss out your old computer, while you’re at it.

Maybe it’s from my love of Star Trek, but I love the idea of projections, holograms…  maybe even teleportation some day…  I’m just a sci-fi geek, but these futuristic ideas are so exciting to me, and they hold so much potential for a better life.  I mean, business alone would be way more fun with holograms!

If anyone could make this happen, and make it sleek and beautifully designed, it’d be Apple.  But for now, I’m very happy with my iMac, my iPad 2, my iPod Touch, Mike’s iPhone…  You get the idea.  ;)

Geek Flowchart

1 Aug

The good people over at Flowtown have made a chart after my own heart.  This lovely little Geek Flowchart has me all over it, and I was absolutely enamoured when I saw it, despite its lack of lady geeks like myself.  So, which geeks do I identify with?

Obviously our good friend the internet geek.  As a programmer/web site builder, he and I are two peas in a pod…  Or a sweater vest.

As he clings to his iPad, this fellow social media and blogging aficionado could trade quips about sleek Apple design all day on any of our many platforms.

Voyager and TNG forever!  My love of Captain Picard takes up a huge place in my heart…  This one needs very little explanation.

I love getting a little quality time with StarCraft II, a little Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood or maybe even some Zombie Smash (I still love it!) or anything else that captures my attention.  I just love escaping into my own world for a bit…  Also, winning.

The food and design geeks embody my love of everything pleasing to the senses and my love of creativity.  I’m very particular about my aesthetics, and I do geek over fonts just as much as I love getting in the kitchen with a new recipe or making something up on the fly.

As a film making geek, as well as a lover of horror, zombies and Tarantino, I think it’s fair to say that I fit in as a film geek, even if that isn’t one of my dominant geek trades.  Also, I’m a major music geek.  I just love getting my hands on an instrument (no, not like that) and finding a way to make it work beautifully.  Plus, I love writing my own music, which just fuses it all together and leaves me for many nights working intently on getting everything just right.

So, what kind of a geek are you?

OS X Lion

20 Jul

Today’s the day!  OS X Lion is here.  As you know, I’m a Mac geek, so I got it on my computer and have already been playing around with it.  It’s actually so much fun to use.  It’s really cute, very intuitive and it just feels like a big iPad in a way, which is really exciting, since you know I love my iPad.  There’s something a lot more playful about this one, it just mimics how you’d want your computer to behave in a lot of ways.

When I open an app, it just pops right up.  There interactions with the apps have really changed with Lion and I love it!  The interface itself looks wonderful, and it’s a lot more subtle with the icons, so you can focus more on the task at hand.  There’s more continuity between the apps.  It’s these little things that make such a difference.  Apple is so amazing with their “less is more” philosophy.

Using the scrolling more like an iPad/iPod/iPhone is a bit disorienting, but I’ll get used to it and it’ll be something to love in no time!  The widescreen options are so great for reading through lots of different mail messages, especially related ones.  It’s going to help me be even more efficient and on top of things!  Drag and drop is going to take a bit of getting used to.  I thought I could drag a download link onto my desktop, but I don’t think I can.  Still, it’s pretty cool.  Maybe that’ll be in the next OS update.

Launchpad is so sleek and effective, plus it makes my computer look like a 27 inch iPad in a lot of ways…  It makes me feel like a kid, so giddy with all these new little additions.  Oh, and I just love how I can swipe back and forth between pages with my trackpad!  I’m still learning a lot about the new features (there are about 250 of them!) and I get completely floored by how amazing every new thing I find!  Mac is such a wonderful company, because big updates like this really make it feel like I’m on a completely new computer.  And we all know how much I love getting new computers.  ;)

Mac Lover Comic

8 Jul

This is just a cute little comic I wanted to share, courtesy of Sticky Comics.  I think it’s absolutely adorable and very true in my opinion.  My iMacs, MacBook, iPad 2, iPod Touch and even Mike‘s iPhone are all my little friends.  I realize that makes me sound crazy, but it’s true!  I guess these are the words of a true Mac evangelist.

Apple WWDC 2011!

6 Jun

Camille Crimson of The Art of Blowjob

Why am I so happy?  The Apple WWDC, of course!  I always feel like a little kid on Christmas waiting to open presents!  So…  What was under the tree?

Well, iCloud for one, which sounds really cool!  It’s a free centralized hub for everything!  Even iTunes!  I’m excited to be able to use it…  It’ll make it really great for someone like me with a lot of different things always on the go.  Sometimes it’s way too hard to keep everything in order.  This will help so much!

The new iOS 5 is going to be pretty awesome, too!  A new Safari, a way better camera app which will be great for spur of the moment shots and then iMessage, which is going to kick BBM’s butt.  Of course it will.  It’s Apple.  ;)

Rawr!  Lion’s here!  Airdrop is going to be so good for sharing files back and forth over and over again.  Mission control is going to make me feel like some kind of Bond villain with the whole world right at my fingertips.  As someone who often has a ton of windows open, this is going to make my life a lot easier.

Even iTunes Match sounds pretty cool if you’re totally anal-retentive about your music collection.  It certainly beats tracking down album covers all night long.  Not that I’d know that from personal experience…

You know me, I’m a Mac geek through and through, so this is always a big deal for me.  It’s not quite the unveiling of the iPad, but it’s still pretty exciting!  Do you have your eye on anything in particular?  Are any of you as excited as I am?
