Well, we didn’t win our category this year. C’est la vie. You can’t always get what you want, but it really is great that we were nominated. It’s tough with these huge mainstream awards because the criteria isn’t incredible clear for what makes something “the best” and there are a lot of DVD categories, but far fewer categories for websites… Especially the more artistic and unconventional ones like ours.
We’re incredibly lucky to have other awards shows like the Feminist Porn Awards with panels encouraged to seek out different and interesting applicants. Having more amazing porn awards with this kind of approach would be a truly wonderful thing, as would more web-only awards… A lot of us aren’t on DVD, yet, and a lot of the most interesting stuff is online. It’s where a lot of inventive people thrive, as it’s a lot easier for smaller companies to put out their content without as much extraneous worrying. I guess the internet democratized porn and we’re still getting used to that.
Of course, we also want to congratulate the winners. I’m sure it’s a very tough decision to make when there are so many interpretations of porn to choose from. Next up: the AVNs! Regardless of what happens, receiving this kind of attention from the mainstream is a really powerful thing. And there’s always next year for XBIZ! ;)

I was going to make up a whole list of categories– “most educational,” “most believable,” “most artistic,” etc– but then I realized there’s really only one category that matters: “Did this help me love myself and others more?”

Camille, while it may seem nice to be recognized by peers, you are not in the same class. Cal states it well. I feel that you not winning, confirms this. I honestly really appreciate that. I’m not too let down, and I understand that what we do is very different from the mainstream idea of porn… We continue to knock down barriers and I hope that eventually porn means as many interpretations of sex as possible.
Well I would be interested in realism. Porn stars seem to be poor actors, so these skits that are devised about coming home with you fancy suit, to a wife who is getting it on with your best friend, just don’t fly.
I would also look for true erotica, the spark that holds my attention, the cum shot, the initial wrapping of the woman’s mouth around the erect penis,the boob being rubbed, the affection being show for each other.
There is also the display of beauty of the actors bodies. The beautiful round pendulant breasts of the female, and the long firm penis. The masculine physique, the round curves of the female body.
Last, short, reality is not 15-20 minutes, it is 5-6 minutes.
So to summarize, realism, erotica, and beauty.
I love the way you look at things. I think there are so many ways to look at porn, and a lot of people forget that.
