Montreal in Winter

A Monday Morning in Montréal from CloudRaker on Vimeo.

This is a great little video that has been making the rounds on the Canadian (and especially Montreal) side of the interwebs.  I get a lot of questions about how cold it gets here, how snowy it is and I certainly try to give my best description, but there’s nothing quite like seeing it for yourself.  This video was shot either this Monday or last Monday…  I’m not sure.  But that’s pretty much what it’s like here right now.

This is definitely not the most snow we’ve ever gotten, but it’s a good representation of this winter.  We haven’t had the nice fluffy snow this year and I kind of like that.  It’s been more of the icy stuff, which is pretty, but makes it difficult to walk around town.  Montreal in winter can be some particularly treacherous territory.  I guess that’s why a lot of us become homebodies in the winter.  Would you leave the house if you had a well-stocked fridge, a fireplace and someone to snuggle up with?  I didn’t think so.

So, is this what you expected?  Do you think it’s pretty or would you stay away from a Montreal winter at all costs?  I’m always interested to see what people like.  I’m more of a fall girl myself, but there is something magical about a sprinkle of snow for the holidays.  The three (or more) months of winter afterwards…  It’s a little more challenging.  It is quite beautiful, though, from the inside looking out.

Living in the mid-west of the USA, we see quite a bit of snow, too. It looks absolutely beautiful there, though.
As long as YOU are there, Montreal is a warm and beautiful place.

Boston is a little more temperate than Montreal but essentially the same.Snow is pretty partly because its clean and it hides blemishes in the landscape.Let’s face it,the inclement weather fosters intimacy indoors. We love Montreal. Its like going to Europe without trans Atlantic flight

That is quite true. There’s nothing quite like cozying up with someone to stay warm…

It is nice to snuggle while watching it snow, and enjoying hot coffee or hot cocoa. And a nice fuzzy warm blanket. I also like snuggling while listening to it rain.

I love how you all make the best (and most sexy/romantic) out of a cold situation!

I love Canada in the winter time! I used to stay right downtown Montreal and go to all the great restaurants in an area near the college. Also Saskatoon at -40C is a fun place in the winter, along with Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The life of an airline pilot is great!

That sounds like such a great way to have a taste of a cold winter without too much of it. :)

I think I’ve seen some amazing historical photos of Winters in Montreal with snow up to the roofs of homes, etc… explaining those front steps you all have!

Makes me wish that I had seen Montreal sometime other than summer.

I would love to live in Montreal if only for a few months (if not longer). I have lived in California my whole life and really haven’t experienced show/winter at all. A friend who is Québécois told me that it’s not unusual to be trapped at work when blizzard hit Montreal. That sounds always sounded weird and fun to me.

It would definitely be nice to get the experience, but I would definitely advise that you dress warmly! :P
