I was perusing through a few blogs and I came across an article called Why Pornstars Hate Facebook. Of course, knowing my track record with Facebook, it piqued my interest. Unfortunately, when I got the comments, I got fairly saddened by how ignorant people are about performers from the porn industry. This is the kind of thing I’m talking about:
All I wanna say is, “Good for you Facebook!” Fuck freedom. I don’t want Plastic Fake Tits spammin’ all over my wall because my teenage nephew would see it. And it would be awkward.
That’s really classy. Because porn performers would somehow be able to spam people’s walls? All we want is fair access to a website which we can utilize to enhance our business, just like every single other business out there.
Wannabe porn stars and their spam is what tanked MySpace. Let’s not let it happen with facebook. Also, there’s the issue of wider use with fb, a lot more older adults, parents etc so it’s a more “sterile” environment, if you will.
Myspace tanked because it allowed way too many ridiculous customizations… Not because of porn performers.
It just goes to show that the masses still aren’t very enlightened when it comes to porn people being real people. I’m just thankful I have wonderful people like those of you who read my blog who know to treat all people. even naked people, with respect.

YOU need to start a porn-friendly (But good porn only) social network called FacePorn! (PornBook? PornFace?)
The plastic, the fake, the artifice of so-called “mainstream porn” (The stuff produced by studios, that GLUT the shelves at the back of Video Stores) can dry up and blow away for all I care
Well, I hope that some day, at the very least, the mainstream will give way to something a little more honest.
In discussions I’ve had with mainstream producers, they don’t WANT to give way… which is unfortunate to say the least, but their loss is your (and our, meaning you fans) gain!
Exactly. It can’t go on one way forever, as we’ve seen with every type of culture. At a certain point, things change and we need to adapt.
There’s nothing nastier than the morally righteous.
Exactly!
In my country the communist China, those officials who criticize porn the most are the biggest consumers of red light districts when they are not watched, either at home and abroad.
We are hard to get access to facebook from here, otherwise I will take a look myself.
Sounds like there’s a lot of corruption at play there.

I don’t use face book so I’m at a loss regarding why it is bad for porn stars. What I glen from your comments is that certain people using face book want to censor it so that their nephews will not be able to look at fake boobs. Haven’t we gone far enough with all of the restriction on our freedom due to 9/11 without now using ad hoc censors to restrain our freedoms.
As far as fake boobs well they can stare at those boobs all they want, while wondering why their dicks have not grown longer after buying the touted medications to create 10″ members. Let the fools abound, and leave us alone.
They just keep deleting the Facebook accounts and pages of people in porn because we’re in porn, even though we don’t post anything adult in nature. People are being alarmist because you wouldn’t be bombarded by anything unless you joined the fan page/added the pornstars as friends. It’s a pretty silly society we live in.
I don’t do Facebook but my colleagues all have their own page and it’s amazing how many “friends” they have – many of whom they have never met. It’s a social networking site for goodness sake, a place to be part of a community, and a place I guess where people search for “friends”. As part of a “normal” non-virtual community you’re limited on your range of friends and acquaintances; distance provides a very good barrier between who you can meet and who you can’t. One of the reasons Facebook is so popular is that you can delve into someone’s life without too much effort, and through it’s “friends of” network you can delve into the life of almost any Facebook person. Porn Stars have their own community, as do religions, petrol-heads, vegetarians and the local W.I. (Women’s Institute), but no-one gets too upset if a vegetarian admits to having real mayonnaise on their salad (Mayo made from eggs, the unborn children of mother hens). What I’m trying to say is, if people want to find out what’s going on within a community then they should be prepared for what they find, and either embrace it or turn away. What makes a porn star any different to a vegetarian? (that’s not a very good analogy but you get what I mean). As you say Camille, we are all real people, and as adults we should all be able to understand and accept why we do what we do.
Keep the faith Camille, you and Mikle are doing wonders for us.
C
That’s exactly it, C! If you add a pornstar, expect pornstar-related updates… But Facebook doesn’t force you to add anyone and there’s no way to spam or bombard people in any way unless the person has made a conscious effort to add a pornstar to their friends/become their fan. It’s silly.
It may be silly, but to quote Sheldon “Cathedra mea, regulae meae”
In this case, it’s Facebooks chair. They made the decision not to allow “adult” entertainment… and they don’t appear to have suffered from it.
It’s true that they haven’t suffered, but the decision to let big businesses in but not to allow porn performers to have their own personal fan pages/profiles is just really weird and puritanical.
It is unfortunate but true and nearly universal that members of a group—a race, an ethnos, a profession—will tend to get lumped together, and also that obnoxious behavior sticks in the mind better than neutral or pleasing. The net effect is that everyone tends to be pre-judged to be liable to the least desirable traits of any group of which they’re a member. (Example: all female-made porn’s credibility was reduced by the Gail Palmer deception.)
The only thing to do is to continue to act as well as you can, and demand your rights if you can get ‘em, Organizing and self-policing could help—establishing a ring of porn stars (and their production companies, flacks, backers, and suitcase pimps) whose endorsement would mean something because it indicated a commitment to good Facebook citizenship might go somewhere.
Well, that’s sort of what Violet Blue’s Our Porn, Ourselves was trying to do. I still have a fanpage on Facebook and I essentially just exchange polite pleasantries, no links or photos that are all respectful of the Facebook guidelines. Most of the porn performers/producers like myself wouldn’t dream of posting untoward material.
pornsatrs just want free ad spcae – it works and gets attention.
Well, Facebook lets all companies have “free adspace” and they are often not at all personal in nature. With my Facebook fan page, I actually interact with people, which is a lot more than advertising.
and we are so glad my cherie
Well, I use Facebook occasionally, but, I have to say, I’ve never encountered problems with spam, even if I make connections to adult materials. Well, no more than anything else I connect to. But nothing completely unrelated jumps out at me. Honestly, the most obnoxious thing I have to deal with is friends inviting me to play silly facebook games with them. I get worse stuff on Yahoo.
Sadly, yes, people like to use generalizations. It’s easier and lets them judge and feel knowledgeable without actually thinking or researching the topic. Unfortunately, people also like to be right, and when generalizations often prove to be wrong, they insulate themselves and cry even louder about how they – as opposed to the shadowy “them” – know the truth and are right. I think it makes people feel smart and special to be part of the “good people”. The enlightened few. But almost every “enlightened” group is ignorant in the eyes of some other group that knows the “truth”.
Yeah, I think those games are a much bigger spam issue than allowing people from all walks of life to have profiles/fan pages.
Yes Myspace allowed to many personalizations, but the reason I personally became disinterested in it ‘was’ because of the ridiculous amounts of fake friend requests from spammers / wanna be porn stars. It got to the point that I was getting 10+ requests a day from spammers with fake accounts. Just like every man in the world, I appreciate my porn, I just don’t need my social media friends knowing how much.
p.s.- I still haven’t gotten over the bad taste in my mouth that I got from Myspace porn spammers. The wisest thing Zuckerb’ has done with Facebook is ‘not’ sell out with his product (FB could be making billions more if it were allowed). Otherwise the market will push porn onto people’s FB pages. How is a person supposed to be FB friends with people like their grandmother, and also have your favorite pornstar sending you pics?
Facebook doesn’t operate that way, however. You can’t spam like you can on Myspace. People need to be your friend in order to post on your wall and a fan page will only send you information if you allow it to. There are a lot of privacy controls that would not allow your grandmother to see certain pages you have liked, for example.
Writer David Foster Wallace wrote an article included in his collection of essays “Consider the Lobster” (which covers all kinds of topics) where he attends an AVN Awards ceremony. The article, entitled “Big Red Son” offers a pretty humorous examination of the relationship between performers in the porn industry and its audience (and their misconceptions). If you haven’t already read it, it could be a good quickie (it is a short read, and yes.. I threw in a euphemism! I couldn’t resist-sorry).
Sounds pretty cool. I’ll have to check it out some time!
