I’m not really sure what to say.  I think I may have been conned and I’m actually kind of sad about it.  This spring/summer, I started talking to someone on Twitter called Alexa DiCarlo.  She was a sex worker and had a slew of blogs/Tumblrs and spoke really eloquently about sex.  She was working on her doctorate in sexuality and she gave some very interesting insight into sex work, sex and sexuality.  Unfortunately, she also appears to have been fake.

I had read some things about how she might not be exactly who she said she was and a couple of people mentioned it in passing to me, but I took that with a grain of salt because people tend to say things like that about anyone who doesn’t want to be completely transparent online, especially if they’re a woman working in sex.  But now, people on a number of blogs are saying that Alexa is actually a middle-aged man in a Delaware government job.  That doesn’t inspire too much confidence.

This makes me a little sad because we had some genuinely nice exchanges, I did an interview with her for one of her projects and I even blogged about how interesting and great I thought she was.  I’m not going to get into the drama going on in blogs because there’s a lot of it.  All I can say is that I’m disappointed because this makes sex bloggers, sex workers and outspoken women have to defend themselves and be more out and open to avoid this kind of comparison.  Obviously, I’m everywhere and you have seen me talk, tweet pictures and videos and build relationships with you guys so this isn’t about me specifically, but a lot of people who need to stay anonymous will have more doubt cast on them.

Plus, I just don’t like being lied to.  There’s a counter statement claiming that this middle aged man is one of Alexa’s clients and he hosted her sites, bought her things on Amazon and she vouched for him to other sex workers, but it all sounds far fetched.  So, I’m sorry I lead any of you astray by linking myself to Alexa.  It’s a shame.
